'The Girl From The Record Shop' has just been released and is available to view on Frank Turner's YouTube page. Frank described the story in the song as a 'flight of fancy' and a visualisation of how he had hoped romance would be when he was a child. He was also keen on the idea that automatons should feature in the animation, so I designed the set and puppets to have the appearance of having been made almost entirely from copper and bronze, which are metals often associated with Victorian/steampunk robots.

'Wendigo Rag', released today, is the third animation for Hannah Rose Platt ('Deathbed Confessions') I have been commissioned to make and it follows the story of two teenagers who become lost in a forest. The film is described as 'a grizzly festive dark comedy where a road trip gone wrong tests the boundaries of friendship versus survival'. I had tremendous fun working on it and particularly enjoyed creating the car, a rusty 1950s Chevrolet, and background scenery. A behind the scenes video can be viewed below. Here is a behind the scenes time-lapse video of 'The Gentleman', a song by Hannah Rose Platt, which has just been released. I created the animation using a technique of manipulating sand in a lightbox and photographing the changes frame-by-frame. The sand is back-lit, creating darker areas where the layer of sand is thickest. Behind The Scenes VideoI've just finished a new stop motion music video for Hannah Rose Platt called 'Feeding Time For Monsters', which is due to be released sometime in Spring/Summer along with the delayed 'The Gentleman'. 'Feeding Time For Monsters' involved the creation of a number of puppets, including a giant spider, and a haunted house with various rooms for the main protagonist to explore.
This year, I have been focusing on my model making business, 'Home In Miniature’, creating models of houses from photographs that commissioners send me. Earlier in the year, ’Home In Miniature’ was featured in ‘Country Life’, ‘The Times’ and ‘Chichester Observer’. Extracts of these articles and examples of my work can be seen on my sister-website: www.homeinminiature.com
During July/September, I was also commissioned to animate ‘The Gentleman’, a music video for the singer Hannah Rose-Platt, to be released in early 2022, which I thoroughly enjoyed working on. I created the film using sand animation, a stop motion technique which involves the manipulation of sand over a light-box. I made the light-box using an LED office ceiling light, which I housed inside a box constructed from old wooden fence posts. To reduce the glaring intensity of the light, I overlayed the ceiling light with a sheet of transparent polycarbonate (cheaper than acrylic/perspex sheeting), over which I had applied a layer of matt white self-adhesive vinyl (of the kind used to cover kitchen cabinets).
As ‘The Gentleman’ has not yet been released, I am not able to show any material from the film. However, after its release, I will upload a time lapse video showing how animated it. I recently finished creating the animation for 'Josephine', a music video by the punk band 'Drones'.
Due to its mature content, it is a very different film to the ones I have made previously, and I had great fun working on it. I was in direct contact with members of the band, who let me know what to include in the narrative. The video is now available to watch at www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQt6fawoJVI Warning: contains some adult themes, blood and gore. In this short advert for 'Archibald Shaw: Structural and Civil Engineers', a watermill is converted into a windmill with added solar panels. I have started a new business called 'Home In Miniature', making and selling model houses. I am working from photographs that my customers take and email to me. I am marketing them as 'art pieces' rather than architectural models, since, working from photos, they are not entirely to scale.
